Arab-Andalousian Music is characterized by rhythm and velocity. This type of music is based on four types of rhythm: hejej, ramel, first takil, second takil; "velocity distinguishes the different varieties of rhythm, and this depends more on the subject matter of the words that the quantity of the syllables.

Arab-Andalousian music evolved in the Iberian peninsula, and which was exiled to North Africa when Grenada fell in 1492. Arabs considered any form of music immoral and dishonest because it violated their religious laws. As a result, music was limited to slaves and slave-singers as a form of entertainment. Over time, however, these songs became popular and acceptable in all social arenas.

Brought to Europe by Rachid Guerbas and accompanies by four great Music Masters of the Algiers tradition, the Albaycin Ensemble plays one of the Arabo-Andalousian repertory's 16 nouba. Alternating free and measured movements, repertories from Algiers and Tlemcen, the Nawba Mezoum unveils the wealth of this music's poetic love songs.

At the Festival L'Imaginaire, the audience enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to see and hear a unique performance by the Albacyn Ensemble.
